EL CATRINA
Project Type
Gastro bar
Date
2018
Location
Mexico City
El Catrina draws its concept from two distinctive Mexican elements: the Day of the Dead and the traditional Mexican cantina. The Day of the Dead inspires the design elements, such as the patterns of papel picado, the niches of the cemeteries, and the indirect lighting reminiscent of candlelight, among others. These elements are translated into lighting intentions, latticework, patterns, and other architectural features.
From the cantina, the experience aimed to be recreated in both the space and the gastronomy of "El Catrina" is derived.
The day-night dichotomy is also important, aiming to create different atmospheres during the day and night. This is achieved through lighting that accentuates the shadows cast by the latticework during the day and highlights elements such as niches or shelves that reinterpret the geometry of the Day of the Dead altar at night.
